Beacon Innovation Challenge - Accessing Beacons

Last Updated: Sep 29, 2016 10:19PM CDT

The Beacon Innovation Challenge beacons installed at Chatswood Station have been configured to broadcast their advertisements in BlueCats Secure mode. This means that the beacons broadcast a proprietary rotating data advertisement which requires decoding by the BlueCats SDK for iOS or Android before being available for detection and ranging by an app. See here for additional information on BlueCats Secure mode.

When you receive your Starter Packs, first make sure you claim and register your pack with our Platform.

To access the beacons at Chatswood Station, follow the steps below:

  1. Create an App using the BlueCats Platform at for use with the BlueCats SDK. See instructions for creating an SDK AppToken in the BlueCats Web Manager
  2. Request access to the Chatswood Station Shared Beacon Network. All accounts created for the Beacon Innovation Challenge will be automatically given access to the Chatswood Stations Beacons during the trial period. Please contact or if you have any problems or questions accessing the beacons during the trial period.

  3. View shared beacons with the BC Reveal app (from 10 October 2016 to 13 November 2016). Beacons will appear while scanning in 'Sniffer' view when in range of the beacon. See instructions for detecting beacons with the BC Reveal app

  4. Chatswood Station beacons will be available to your App via the BlueCats SDK (from 10 October 2016 to 13 November 2016). The BlueCats SDK has been designed to enable use of beacon in either Secure or iBeacon mode without any code changes. To test using beacons in Secure mode, the mode of your test beacons can be changed using the BC Reveal admin app. See instructions about changing beacon mode with the BC Reveal app

One important difference to note between using beacons in Secure or iBeacon mode is background detection for iOS apps (detecting a beacon while the app is not visible on the screen). Background Bluetooth mode plist setting is required in addition to iOS Location permission. See instructions about enabling background bluetooth for secure beacons in iOS

Identifying Beacons

Even when beacons detected with the BlueCats SDK are broadcasting in secure mode, their meta-data provided by the SDK to your app will include beacon.major and beacon.minor properties to match the beacons to their position in the provided beacon layout and location maps.
